Many of the stories discussed at NBC Palm Springs come directly from the concerns of local residents. On this occasion, it was Andres Marquez who stepped forward to highlight a growing problem across the valley that few people consider but affects everyone—illegal dumping and environmental damage in the desert.
Marquez joined the show to share how his own spiritual awakening led him to walk away from material values and focus on improving the environment around him. What he discovered while traveling through the desert shocked even him.
“It’s not just a little roadside litter. It’s whole vehicles, dozens of tires, appliances leaking harmful fluids like antifreeze, oil, and refrigerants,” Marquez explained. He has also found dead animals in remote areas, further highlighting the dangerous impacts of human neglect.
While Marquez has reached out to cities and the county, he made it clear his intention is not to blame anyone but to focus on action. “I’ve been to meetings, made calls, but I don’t want to waste energy pointing fingers,” he said. “I’m going to do something about it regardless. I just want the community to come together to fix it.”
His hope is to see the desert restored to its natural beauty for future generations, especially his newborn son. “I don’t want my son to grow up thinking seeing trash and pollution on the side of the road is normal,” Marquez said. “This is our world. We should take care of it because if we love our children, we owe it to them to leave them something better.”
Marquez called on the community to put aside differences and unite to address this growing crisis. “Once people see that others care, maybe they’ll realize they’re doing harm and change their ways. It’s simple.”
