A field trip to Legoland for Carter Elementary School students from Palm Desert took an unexpected turn during their return trip. Parents say the bus driver wouldn’t let the children use the bathroom, leaving them upset and emotional.
Video footage from the stop on Cook Street in Palm Desert shows children in distress. Parents claim the driver pulled over, exited the bus, and left them locked inside while contacting authorities. However, the bus company counters these claims, stating the air conditioning was on, the kids were not locked in, and could have exited at any time.
CHP certification requires drivers to enforce safety rules, including prohibiting movement or bathroom use while the bus is moving. Just two weeks ago, a similar bus crash on I-10 highlighted these safety concerns, injuring over 30 people.
NBC Palm Springs obtained video from inside the bus showing some students walking in the aisle while the bus was in motion, which violates safety protocols. The driver reportedly issued warnings over the bus microphone and ultimately called CHP for assistance.
Parents gathered at Cook Street to retrieve their children and voiced concerns over the incident. Some claim their kids were traumatized and now fear future bus trips.
This incident highlights the importance of balancing safety with student needs while reinforcing that jumping to conclusions before knowing the full story can mislead the public.
