Amaya D’Souza is ending her junior year at Palm Desert High School on a high note—and stepping into senior year with confidence and insight. A regular guest on our show, Amaya joins us weekly to share her perspective on what’s happening in the Coachella Valley.
This week, she reflected on a transformative school year, describing it as a time of growth and unexpected change. “It’s surreal to realize I’ll never have to go through junior year again,” she said. “Next year, I’ll be graduating. That’s exciting.”
With summer now in full swing, Amaya turned her focus to what students can do with their free time. Her answer: Pickleball.
“I think a lot of people don’t realize how welcoming the local pickleball community is,” she shared. “I started playing about a year and a half ago after being introduced by a group of older players. Now, I play regularly with friends.”
She encourages other teens to give the sport a try—especially at the Palm Desert Civic Center, where recently converted courts make it a hotspot for players of all ages. “It gets packed,” she warned with a smile, “but it’s worth it. You might just have to fight someone for a court!”
Amaya’s takeaway? Don’t let the heat or boredom keep you inside. Get active, meet people of all ages, and try something new this summer.
