Earlier in the program, we discussed the growing public distrust in national news and why local news still holds a stronger connection with its audience. To dive deeper into that conversation, NBC Palm Springs News Director David Reese joined the show.
So why do people get so worked up over the news—and sometimes, the anchors themselves?
“You’re an agitator,” Reese said with a laugh. “You press people’s buttons. That’s what we hired you for.”
Reese and our host have a long history, having worked together in Los Angeles years ago. That professional trust laid the foundation for the show’s more unconventional tone—one that’s resonating with viewers. As Reese put it, “It’s working. People like it. You’re watching.”
Why People Still Trust Local News
When asked why national news is often met with skepticism while local news maintains credibility, Reese offered two key insights.
“First, I think people believe—rightly or wrongly—that national news networks have an agenda or are trying to cozy up to whoever’s in power. Local stations aren’t seen that way,” he said. “No one here in Palm Springs has ever told me how to report the news.”
The second reason? Familiarity.
“People trust those who live and work in their own communities. Local anchors are neighbors, not distant celebrities.”
Staying Local, Staying Relevant
Reese emphasized that NBC Palm Springs has a clear focus: local storytelling.
“There are so many sources for national news, cable channels, and websites. But local stories—real stories about your neighborhood, your school board, your roads—those are harder to find. And that’s what we do here.”
The station is also consciously steering away from the old TV news trope of “if it bleeds, it leads.”
“That’s not why people live here,” Reese explained. “We don’t need to lead with crime stories that don’t reflect daily life. People want to feel informed, not alarmed. I always say: crime is the crack cocaine of TV news—it’s cheap, it’s easy, and it’s bad for you.”
The Bottom Line
Local journalism, when done right, provides relevance, connection, and service to the community. And according to Reese, that’s the mission at NBC Palm Springs: “We focus on what actually impacts your life here—because that’s what matters.”
