Assemblyman Jeff Gonzalez says he remains committed to transparency and accountability, even after a disappointing outcome in Sacramento where his push for a state audit of the Coachella Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) failed by just one vote.
Appearing on NBC Palm Springs, Gonzalez shared his reaction to the vote, which came after a dramatic hearing filled with testimony from parents, educators, and community members who overwhelmingly supported the audit.
“It’s disappointing,” Gonzalez said. “This wasn’t about politics. It was about doing what’s right for the students, the staff, and the taxpayers.”
The proposal received bipartisan support and seemed poised for approval—until, according to Gonzalez, political interference altered the outcome. Gonzalez pointed specifically to State Senator Steve Padilla, alleging that he used his influence behind the scenes to block the audit effort.
“There are no secrets here in the Capitol,” Gonzalez stated. “Senator Padilla turned his back on the community. He used his leverage and relationships to kill this.”
Despite the loss, Gonzalez emphasized that the effort brought significant issues into the public eye. He vowed to continue fighting for oversight, transparency, and responsible financial practices in the district.
“We’re not stopping here,” he said. “This is about restoring trust and protecting the future of our students and our schools.”
Gonzalez is also continuing work on other legislative priorities, including Highway 74 safety improvements, geothermal development, and cost-of-living measures aimed at helping struggling families in the eastern Coachella Valley.
As for the impact on the community, Gonzalez pointed to the looming consequences of nearly 300 job losses within CVUSD, warning of a difficult summer ahead for many families.
“People are hurting. Add rising gas prices and job cuts, and this is going to be tough,” he said. “We need the community to stay engaged and make their voices heard.”
Gonzalez closed by reiterating his commitment to his constituents, saying, “You have my word—I’ll keep fighting.”
