Derrick Lawson, a fixture at Indio High School for more than four decades, is retiring—leaving behind a powerful legacy of dedication, innovation, and inspiration. Known for his deep passion for teaching and his personal connection with students, Lawson’s final day was filled with emotional visits from former and current students, parents, and colleagues.
“I got there this morning about an hour and a half before everyone else, just so I could walk the campus one last time,” Lawson shared in a heartfelt interview. “Today has been an emotional day—so many memories and people have made this journey incredibly meaningful.”
Throughout his tenure, Lawson witnessed and helped lead major shifts in the educational landscape. He described how the traditional “factory model” of teaching has evolved into a more personalized approach, citing the rise of IEPs (Individualized Education Plans) and differentiated instruction tailored to each student’s learning style.
One of the biggest transformations, according to Lawson, has been the role of technology and information access in the classroom. “We’re no longer in the space age; we’re in the age of information,” he explained. “The emphasis now is on critical thinking—using information effectively, not just memorizing it.”
Lawson also addressed the growing conversation around AI in education. He encouraged parents to engage with their schools and see firsthand how modern classrooms integrate tools like AI not as a replacement, but as an enhancement to student learning. “Technology helps us deepen education. It frees up our minds for more complex thinking and creativity,” he said.
Despite officially retiring, Lawson hinted that he’s not disappearing from the world of education. “I’m not really going anywhere,” he noted with a smile. “I’ll always be part of this community.”
Lawson’s impact, both inside and outside the classroom, has been profound. His passion, leadership, and forward-thinking approach have left an indelible mark on the Coachella Valley educational community.
