A storm is brewing in the Coachella Valley as numerous clients of Vacation Rentals of the Desert, based in Palm Desert, claim the company owes them thousands of dollars. For nearly two decades, the firm handled upscale properties, collecting full payment from renters 60 days in advance and forwarding a portion to property owners. But earlier this year, payments to owners suddenly stopped.
Bill Menino, a longtime client, says he’s out nearly $14,000. Repeated calls yielded excuses ranging from missing checks to bank account issues. Eventually, the company claimed their trust account was compromised due to bank fraud, shifting blame to external forces. Yet despite the FDIC coverage typically protecting such losses, no reimbursements have followed, and checks continue to bounce.
Renters like Stephen also suffered, receiving bad checks for canceled stays. As frustrations mounted, the company sent emails citing personal medical issues and an ongoing investigation. But critics believe it's more than coincidence — especially given the Murguias’ prior bankruptcy filing in 2009.
With over 160 properties once under their management, the financial damage could exceed $1 million. Owners and renters alike have contacted the Riverside County District Attorney. However, without clear evidence of fraud, the case remains categorized as a civil dispute.
While many hope for a resolution, the company's silence and track record suggest a grim outlook. For now, affected parties are seeking legal advice and community support, unsure if they’ll ever see their money again.
