Residents of Thousand Palms are once again raising alarms over the impact of short-term rental properties after a recent fire incident nearly caused a disaster in a local neighborhood. Despite a moratorium on new short-term rentals, existing properties continue to host large gatherings, bringing noise, trash, and safety risks that nearby homeowners say have gone unchecked.
In the latest incident, someone staying at one of these rentals reportedly built a large burn pit in the yard. Photos show flames large enough to draw a police response. Neighbors say the blaze could have easily spread and caused major damage—or worse.
For months, residents have complained that the county’s moratorium hasn’t addressed the behavior of current renters, who continue to disturb the area with loud parties and disregard for community rules. Pets have been frightened, property values threatened, and patience worn thin.
Local leaders have yet to outline new measures to strengthen enforcement or provide relief for those affected. Many residents say they don’t oppose short-term rentals entirely—they just want accountability and respect for the people who live there year-round.
As one community member put it, “Noise is one thing, but reckless behavior like that fire could cost lives. If you’re renting, just be a good neighbor.”
