Indio is currently experiencing a historic "renaissance." Recently named one of Fodor’s Travel’s top six U.S. destinations to visit in 2026, the city is one of the fastest-growing hubs in the Coachella Valley. To keep pace with this rapid influx of thousands of new residents and businesses, the City of Indio and the Imperial Irrigation District (IID) have officially broken ground on a series of critical energy infrastructure projects.
The centerpiece of this collaboration is the Avenue 42 Substation upgrade, which recently began construction. This $12 million project will add a third transformer bank to increase capacity and is slated for completion by late August 2026. It is the first of four major projects managed by the Indio Electric Finance Authority (IEFA), a joint partnership formed in 2023. Other upcoming projects include new substations at Avenue 40 and Northgate, alongside an expansion of the Carreon substation. Together, these upgrades will provide enough electricity to power 16,000 single-family homes.
Funding for these essential upgrades comes from a dedicated surcharge on IID bills for Indio residents, averaging approximately $11.40 per month. Officials emphasize that every dollar remains within the city to ensure the local grid can handle the extreme desert heat and support future economic development. A strong electrical "backbone" is the only way to ensure the city’s parks, businesses, and public safety systems continue to thrive during this era of unprecedented growth.
