Roundabouts are becoming more frequent throughout the Coachella Valley, but not all drivers are familiar with how to navigate them safely. Locals Alan and Teresa recently reported two near-misses, citing poor awareness of roundabout rules as a major factor. The situation is particularly noticeable in Old Town La Quinta, where traffic congestion and limited familiarity with roundabouts can lead to dangerous interactions.
California law is clear on roundabout etiquette: vehicles already circulating have the right of way, so drivers entering must yield to the left. Once inside, vehicles should keep moving—no passing or stopping. If a driver misses their exit, they should simply continue around until reaching the correct one.
Signaling is also critical. Drivers must use their right turn signal just before exiting to alert incoming traffic that they can enter the circle safely. Proper adherence to these simple rules can prevent collisions and keep traffic flowing smoothly.
