Despite clear video documentation and calls to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the offending drivers appear to face no accountability, fueling a local sentiment that dangerous behavior goes unpunished. While crossing a double yellow line is a moving violation punishable by a fine (around $234) and points on a license, citizens report reluctance to formally report incidents, sometimes due to family ties with law enforcement.
Compounding this local safety crisis are new federal regulations that threaten to strip commercial trucking licenses from certain immigrant groups, including DACA recipients, refugees, and asylum seekers. In California alone, this regulation puts up to 61,000 truck drivers at risk of losing their jobs. Governor Newsom has fiercely condemned the move as a "reckless" action that will severely damage the state's supply chain and economy, disputing the Federal Transportation Secretary's claim that the rule enhances safety.
