Palm District High School marked Read Across America Week with a unique celebration focused on child literacy. The school hosted Meet at the 50 Literacy Day, bringing kindergarten students from nearby elementary schools to its campus. Students from Carter Washington Charter and Gerald Ford Elementary participated, meeting high school seniors at the 50-yard line for reading activities.
During the event, seniors read books to the children, who were also able to keep copies of the books. The activity created a fun and interactive environment, fostering a connection between younger students and high school mentors. One senior described receiving drawings and small gifts from the kindergartners, highlighting the meaningful interactions that went beyond reading.
Organizers emphasized that events like this demonstrate the importance of community involvement in promoting literacy. By pairing older students with younger children, the program encourages mentorship while making reading an enjoyable, shared experience.
