Several Southern California communities are increasing enforcement and safety measures involving e-bikes.
Brea has increased penalties for unsafe e-bike riding, while an Orange County parent has created a QR-based registration system designed to connect schools and police with parents when young riders are involved in an accident.
The changes come as communities continue to address safety concerns involving young people riding e-bikes.
During the Roggin Report, Brad Ward of Brad Ward Coaching and attorney Brian Harnick of Roemer Harnick discussed whether young riders should be required to complete a safety course before riding an e-bike.
The discussion included the availability of e-bikes for purchase and whether riders are required to demonstrate that they have completed safety training before purchasing one.
Harnick also discussed California's different e-bike classifications and laws governing their use. The segment specifically addressed concerns involving children riding motorized bicycles at higher speeds.
The discussion included increased fines, enforcement and parental responsibility as possible components of e-bike safety efforts.
The segment also highlighted the difference between traditional bicycles and newer electric bicycles, which can reach higher speeds depending on their classification.
The issue of e-bike safety has prompted some Southern California communities to consider additional education, enforcement and registration measures.
