Near-Record Heat Hits Coachella Valley as Temps Approach 100 Degrees
The snow is receding up at the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, and with temperatures well above normal, that melt is only going to continue.
After a high of 93 degrees on Sunday — well above the seasonal norm of 82 — the Coachella Valley is bracing for even hotter days. By Monday afternoon, many desert cities were already climbing into the low 90s, with Palm Springs and Indio expected to reach 97 degrees, and La Quinta, Palm Desert, and Rancho Mirage inching up to 98. Thermal is forecasted to hit 98 degrees — exactly the record high set back in 1988.
Overnight lows will also remain warm, staying just below 70 in Palm Springs and dipping into the mid to low 60s across other valley communities under clear skies.
A strong ridge of high pressure is keeping the entire Southwest in a dry and sunny weather pattern, locking in those upper 90s for Tuesday as well. Forecast highs include 97 for Palm Springs, 98 for Indio, and a sizzling 99 degrees in Thousand Palms. If temperatures hit their marks, we may see records tied or broken — Palm Springs' Tuesday high of 97 would match a record also set in 1988.
Things begin to shift on Wednesday as that ridge begins to weaken. Highs will cool slightly into the lower 90s, with more noticeable relief arriving Thursday and Friday. Expect upper 80s Thursday and a return to seasonal normals by Friday with highs in the low 80s.
Winds will stay calm early in the week but start to pick up Wednesday evening, especially in the San Gorgonio Pass and wind-prone areas. Stronger gusts — possibly reaching 40 mph — are expected late Thursday.
Rain? Not in the cards. The dry streak continues with no precipitation in sight for the next seven days.
