President Trump Diagnosed with Chronic Venous Insufficiency: What It Means
Former President Donald Trump has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a condition that may sound serious but is not considered life-threatening. NBC Palm Springs spoke with local cardiologist Dr. Wickramasinghe to get a better understanding of the diagnosis.
“Chronic venous insufficiency is essentially a medical term for leaking veins in your legs,” explained Dr. Wickramasinghe. “While your heart pumps blood throughout the body using arteries, that blood must return to the heart through veins. If those veins begin to leak, the blood doesn’t circulate back properly, which leads to venous insufficiency.”
Dr. Wickramasinghe emphasized that while the condition can cause discomfort, it does not pose a serious health threat. Common symptoms include swelling in the feet and ankles, and as the condition progresses, it may lead to aching, heaviness, tightness, or pain in the legs.
For those experiencing similar symptoms, Dr. Wickramasinghe recommends not to panic but to consult a doctor. “It’s not life-threatening,” he said. “But if you’re seeing swelling or discomfort in your legs, get checked out. In the meantime, elevating your legs or wearing compression stockings can help relieve symptoms.”
