Daily Walking May Reduce Alzheimer's Risk, New Study Suggests
A new study indicates that maintaining a regular walking routine may help reduce the risk of cognitive decline, particularly among individuals with a genetic predisposition to Alzheimer's disease.
The research followed nearly 3,000 participants between the ages of 70 and 79 over a 10-year period, tracking their daily walking habits and cognitive performance. Participants who reported maintaining or increasing their walking activity demonstrated greater improvements in processing speed and executive function compared to those who reduced their walking habits.
The findings suggest that consistent physical activity in the form of walking may provide protective benefits against age-related cognitive decline, with particular relevance for those at higher genetic risk for Alzheimer's disease.
However, researchers acknowledge that the mechanisms behind these cognitive improvements remain unclear and require further investigation to establish causation.
The study results are scheduled to be presented Tuesday at the annual Alzheimer's Association International Conference. The research has not yet undergone peer review or been published in a scientific journal.
