Fall Allergies Hit Nearly One-Third of Adults as Climate Change Extends Suffering

Think seasonal allergies are just a springtime problem? Think again. As autumn leaves begin changing colors across the country, millions of Americans are discovering that fall can be one of the most challenging seasons for allergy sufferers.

Nearly one in three adults and more than one in four children in the U.S. report having seasonal allergies, and medical experts warn that climate change may be making symptoms both more severe and longer-lasting.

Dr. Jessica Hui, a pediatric allergist and immunologist with National Jewish Health, explains in our full video report why fall allergens can be "just as intense" as their spring counterparts, causing the familiar trio of nasal congestion, runny nose, and itchy, watery eyes that plague allergy sufferers.

The cooler weather that draws people outdoors for yard work and encourages them to open windows at home actually increases exposure to fall pollens, which continue circulating in the air until the first hard frost hits.

But relief is possible.

In the complete video story above, reporter Mandy Gaither details specific strategies recommended by allergists to minimize pollen exposure, from timing outdoor activities to simple home maintenance steps that can make a significant difference.
