Study Links Alcohol Consumption to Increased Dementia Risk
It’s time now for Your Health Today, brought to you by Inland Empire Health Plan.
A new study is challenging the long-held belief that moderate drinking might be harmless—or even beneficial—for brain health. Researchers found that drinking any amount of alcohol may increase the risk of developing dementia.
The study analyzed data from nearly 560,000 participants and revealed a surprising pattern: people who reported drinking small amounts of alcohol showed a lower risk of dementia compared to both heavy drinkers and nondrinkers. However, when researchers expanded their analysis using genetic markers across more than two million people, the findings painted a different picture.
The genetic analysis showed that higher lifetime alcohol consumption was consistently linked to a greater risk of dementia, regardless of drinking patterns. In fact, the study reported that consuming just three drinks per week was tied to a 15 percent higher risk of dementia compared to limiting intake to a single drink per week.
Experts say the results suggest that there may not be a truly safe level of alcohol consumption when it comes to brain health. The research adds to a growing body of evidence that emphasizes moderation—and in some cases, abstinence—as the best way to protect long-term cognitive function.
