Health Officials Urge Flu Vaccinations Ahead of Peak Season
Health experts are recommending people get their flu shots now, ahead of the typical peak season in February.
Dr. Lase Ajayi, board chair elect of the American Medical Association and a practicing pediatrician, advises that everyone six months and older receive the flu vaccine before winter progresses further.
Understanding the Flu Virus
Dr. Ajayi explained that the influenza virus is an infection that targets the body's respiratory system, affecting both the upper and lower airways. The virus impacts the entire body, causing a range of symptoms beyond respiratory issues.
Key Differences Between Flu and Common Cold
While both illnesses share some symptoms like coughing, sneezing, and sore throat, several factors distinguish the flu from a common cold:
Onset: Flu symptoms appear much more rapidly than cold symptoms, which tend to develop gradually.
Severity: The flu causes fever, chills, muscle aches, and persistent fatigue—symptoms that are typically absent or mild in common colds.
Systemic impact: Unlike colds, which primarily affect the nose and throat, the flu affects the entire body with pronounced fatigue and body aches.
Medical professionals emphasize that getting vaccinated now provides optimal protection before flu activity intensifies in the coming months.
