Beyond Medication: How Diet and Exercise Help Prevent Osteoporosis Fractures

Osteoporosis is often referred to as a “silent disease,” developing over time without symptoms until a fracture occurs. But experts say there are effective ways to strengthen bones and reduce fracture risk beyond medication.

Nutrition plays a key role, with calcium and vitamin D considered essential for maintaining bone strength. A balanced diet that includes protein, leafy greens, fortified foods, and healthy fats can support overall bone health.

Exercise is just as important. Strength training and weight-bearing activities like walking, running, or lifting weights help stimulate bone growth and improve density. Even small lifestyle changes—like increasing daily steps or adding light resistance exercises—can make a difference over time.

Experts also emphasize the importance of reducing risk factors, such as high sodium intake, excessive alcohol use, and chronic stress, all of which can weaken bones.

Routine screenings, like bone density scans, can help detect early signs of bone loss and guide treatment decisions.

While osteoporosis cannot be fully cured, doctors say combining healthy habits with proper medical care can significantly improve bone strength and reduce the risk of fractures at any age.
