Millions of Women Struggle with Pregnancy and Postpartum Mental Health Challenges
Pregnancy and the postpartum period can be filled with joy and excitement — but for millions of women, it can also bring overwhelming feelings of anxiety, sadness, fear, and emotional exhaustion. Experts say mental health struggles during and after pregnancy are far more common than many people realize. Yet despite how prevalent these conditions are, many women suffer in silence because they don’t recognize the warning signs or believe what they’re experiencing will eventually pass.
Medical professionals stress that postpartum depression, anxiety, and other perinatal mood disorders are temporary and highly treatable when women receive the proper support and care. Symptoms can appear during pregnancy or after childbirth and may include persistent sadness, mood swings, trouble sleeping, feelings of hopelessness, difficulty bonding with a baby, panic attacks, or withdrawing from loved ones. Experts say it’s important to seek help if symptoms last longer than two weeks or begin interfering with daily life.
Doctors also encourage family members and friends to pay attention to behavioral changes and offer support without judgment.
Treatment options may include therapy, support groups, lifestyle changes, medication, or a combination of approaches tailored to each individual’s needs.
Health experts emphasize that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness, and early intervention can make a significant difference in recovery.

Nearly a year after wildfires tore through Mountain Center, the scars are still visible along the Palms to Pines Highway. Now, fire crews are working to repair those burn areas and reduce the risk of flooding, erosion and mudslides when heavy rain arrives. The work includes fire-line suppression repairs, water bars and other measures designed to slow rainwater and keep burned soil from washing away.
