How GLP-1 Weight Loss Medications Can Affect Relationships
GLP-1 medications have become widely known for helping people lose weight, but the physical changes aren't the only changes some patients experience.
Psychotherapist Deborah Krevalin says significant weight loss can also affect relationships, particularly when one partner experiences a major transformation while the other does not.
"The medications themselves are not breaking up these relationships," Krevalin said. "What it's doing is revealing where the foundation was already fragile."
There isn't yet large-scale data specifically examining divorce rates among people taking GLP-1 medications. However, Krevalin points to research involving people who experienced rapid weight loss following bariatric surgery.
She says one Swedish study involving more than 12,000 patients found that 14% divorced within six years.
Krevalin says one potential source of tension involves the changes GLP-1 medications can make to appetite and cravings.
The medications can reduce what is sometimes described as "food noise" — persistent thoughts about food and cravings. But food can also be part of a couple's shared routines, from weekend breakfasts to splitting dessert or sharing a drink.
When one partner suddenly loses interest in those activities, Krevalin says the other person may feel like they've lost more than a shared meal.
"It looks like the Saturday morning pancake routine," she said. "Sharing a glass of white wine. The dessert you split after dinner."
Changes in appearance and confidence can also introduce new challenges. A partner who undergoes significant physical changes may receive more attention from other people, potentially creating insecurity or resentment within the relationship.
Krevalin says partners can respond by becoming curious and supportive or by becoming defensive.
Her advice is to communicate openly about the changes rather than allowing concerns to build.
Couples can also create new traditions that don't revolve around food or alcohol and find individual outlets for their emotions.
That could mean talking with a trusted friend or therapist rather than expecting the partner undergoing the transformation to absorb all of the other person's fears.
"Communication is everything," Krevalin said.
